the bAnd

The pop/rock group - the 'bAnd'  is a new modern music initiative led by Brent Music Service to give learning and performance opportunities to young guitarists, drummers, singers, bass players and keyboard players.  The intention is  that the members of the band are expected to learn how to perform a wide variety of styles, from rock to soul, hip hop to alternative, with tuition and guidance being offered where necessary at every stage from the professional gigging musicians at Brent Music Service.

After applications were assessed in early April 2010, there followed a grueling series of workshop audition weekends in late April and May, from which the members were selected and 'the bAnd' was formed.  Rehearsals then swung into action to prepare them for their first public appearance on 8th July at Wembley Arena!

Debut Public Performance
Not many new bands can lay claim
to performing at Wembley Arena, so having this venue for their first public performance was an incredible opportunity, and one to work hard for in all their rehearsals.

The event was Brent Makes Music 2010 held on Thursday 8th July, and a date that will stay in their minds with pride no doubt!

Confidence and talent
The group came to the stage with confidence and addressed the audience as if they were seasoned artistes!  The music started and the 'gig of a lifetime' began. 'the bAnd' elected to perform two cover numbers for their first appearance at one of the greatest rock venues in the world: 'Superstition' and 'You Might Need Somebody'.

Superstition - music and lyrics by Stevie Wonder, was written in 1972 when Wonder was just twenty-two years old.  The song deals with superstitions and mentions several popular fables in the lyrics.  the bAnd performed the song with energy and conveyed a really strong feel for the rhythm of the music.  The instrumental interludes opened the players up for some impressive creativity and the vocals showed real character in line with the sentiment of the song.

You Might Need Somebody - with music by Tom Snow and Lyrics by Nan O'Byrne originating in 1979, this song is a classic favourite across the world.

With writers who have composed for names such as Barbara Streissand and Michael Jackson and for film soundtracks such as The Lion King II, this song is always a demanding number to perform - but perform it they did with style and apparent ease and to the absolute delight of the audience!

Unquestionable Success
If there had ever been any concerns about whether the bAnd could rise to the challenge of such a short time to rehearse and such an awesome venue in which to perform, these disappeared within seconds - it was clear that the bAnd could 'make the house rock'!

The enthusiastic audience gave them a near celebrity response and showed their appreciation with a spontaneous standing ovation after each number.

Joining a new group which then performs at a world class rock venue - It just shows what a difference music can make to a day!
