"Music'sCool"

"Music'sCool" is an exciting, new, multi-cultural music initiative created by Brent Music Service. It is a primary school, classroom-based programme aimed at introducing music to younger children in a fun and creative, yet sympathetically structured manner.

Embracing "Music'sCool"
Numerous schools in the London borough of Brent already embrace this programme, demonstrating their clear understanding of the many social, educational and creative benefits music can bring.

In the 2009-2010 academic year alone, the programme significantly developed so that for the first time ALL children from each of the years 1 through to 6 in the subscribing schools, have had the opportunity to participate.

The Heart Of The Matter
At its heart lies enjoyment in practical music making, both through singing and instrumental playing.  The structured programme enables an early introduction to music from Year 1, gradually developing the different musical elements through each year group with the use of recorders and voice.  By Year 4, students have a clear understanding of sound, pitch and rhythm and by Years 5 and 6 this progresses to an introduction to the rhythmic traditions of South America and Africa through samba and djembe playing.

Performance Opportunity Of A Lifetime
The success of the programme to date is receiving public recognition.  To mark this growing populariy,  representatives from each of the year groups from 6 of the subscribing primary schools were given the unprecedented opportunity to perform to an enthusiastic audience at Wembley Arena as part of Brent Makes Music 2010.

The young musicians rose to the occasion and offered an inspiring performance of 'Amani Utupe' (a Swahili song whose title means Grant Us Peace, Give Us Courage).  The audience was captivated not only by the colourful spectacle of their performance but also by the high standard of musicianship these young performers had already achieved in such a short time.

Encouragement and Achievement
Learning is at its best when supported by encouragement.  To help the young "Music'sCool" musicians along their way they are presented with a certificate to mark their achievements as each of annual stages of the
programme is completed.  By enabling the children to display their certificate at home, this not only offers recognition of their involvement, but also serves as a visual reminder of the things they have learnt and to give them pride in their achievements.

The Future
Now that "Music'sCool" has established itself across a large collection of primary schools in the London borough of Brent, it's continuing popularity and proven success in the classroom demands its continuing development.  At present, Year 1 through to Year 6 are catered for, but Brent Music Service are now looking to expand the programme to reach out to Reception classes too.  In conjunction with this, a pre-school programme is also evolving so that children are introduced to the wonderful world of music as early as possible.

Getting Involved with "Music'sCool"
If you are a school who would like to take advantage of this exciting and innovative early learning music programme, please contact Brent Music Service to learn how you could enjoy the benefits of "Music'sCool" too.
