The Triangle Project Concert
On Saturday, 7th November at 7.30 pm members of the Brent Triangle Project workshop performed The Triangle Project Concert at Claremont High School, Kenton.

This concert offered a rare opportunity to see some legendary performers in action whilst clearly demonstrating how music has the power to stimulate and inspire young musicians for the future.

Presented by Brent Music Service, in association with DNA Culture, this exciting concert represented the ‘end of course’ result of a ground-breaking music workshop, The Triangle Project.  This musical workshop took place during the October half-term, combining around 30 of Brent's young musicians with some of the biggest professional instrumentalist names from the UK, Africa and the USA,(including Pee Wee Ellis from the James Brown Band, Juldeh Camera star of WOMAD, Ramon Goose from Ace Bluesman and Diabel Cisshoko, Kora from Mali).

At the concert, the Brent workshop participants sat alongside these legendary names in music to present a unique concert opportunity to the public.  The evening not only provided a feast of cultural musical styles performed by the professionals and youngsters combined, but it also demonstrated the scale of musical development these youngsters had achieved through their participation in the workshop.  Through their own commitment and desire to learn they gained vital knowledge about performance, were introduced to the influences of culture on pop music, had the opportunity to write new music and were taught how musical styles are transferred around the world, all under the guidance of a collection of influential professional musicians.

The concert was well received by the attending audience and there were many proud families watching their children perform with the best!

The event as a whole was an innovative project that enabled all those involved to take away a new special moment in the life.  In years to come, the youngsters involved will continue to remember the outstanding ability of the professional musicians with which they were able to work ... hopefully giving them the inspiration to reach for similar standards in their own music making.

The Triangle Project
The Triangle Project is a workshop initiative run by an organisation called DNA Culture, as a way of practically engaging young people in an exploration of popular music from the perspective of migration, immigration and trade.  The week long project explores how people have travelled from one country to another taking their music with them thereby preserving their identity and sharing it with others.

The Workshop
Embraced by Brent Music Service, t
he week long workshop took place during the October half-term at Claremont High School and was designed to take the young participants on a journey of exploration to discover the musical connections between Africa, the Americas and Europe and how music has positively influenced and developed our multi-cultural society.

The Tutors
Renowned professional musicians are offering their wealth of experience to give the Brent participants an all round insight to their music and its heritage.  The tutors for the Brent Triangle Project include:

The Aims
Through a combination of educational approaches the project aims to develop musical and leadership skills, a greater knowledge of the self within our multiple culture and to respect and understand the customs, values and beliefs in other cultures.  These are all achieved by the participants listening and learning from musicians with a different musical heritage, performing during the workshop and at the end of course concert, gaining tuition from leading music professionals, learning about the concepts of musical culture and heritage and learning about the African, African-American and European influences on popular music genres.

Arts Award
In addition to the obvious musical and cultural benefits of this workshop, participants are also able to take advantage of the ‘Arts Award’ initiative which supports young people in developing as artists and arts leaders.  This nationally recognised qualification has three levels of Bronze, Silver and Gold and The Triangle Project is designed to provide participants with the skills and experience that will enable them to gain the Bronze Award.
