Brent Young Musician of the Year 2010 Performs at Wembley Arena

Indira Grier, Brent Young Musician of the Year 2010
Performing at Brent Makes Music 2010 as Special Guest Soloist
Wembley Arena, Thursday 8th July 2010

Indira Grier, won the title of Brent Young Musician of the Year 2010 on her cello in March.  As a result of this achievement she was invited to be the special guest soloist at Brent Makes Music 2010 held at the prestigious concert venue of Wembley Arena.

Indira chose to perform the 1st Movement of Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C Major and mesmerized the audience and other performers with her musicality and dexterity in performing this most challenging of classical works.

Conducted by her father, Indira was accompanied by a small music ensemble, who also showed great professionalism in their own musical performance of this difficult work, receiving the appropriate acknowledgment from Indira and notable appreciation from the audience.  A wonderful moment in the already spectacular programme of this showcase event.

To publicly mark Indira's success in winning the prestigious title of Brent Young Musician of the Year 2010, Mr Peter Swordy, Head of Centre of Excellence at Wembley Stadium and Director of the Wembley Stadium Charitable Foundation (which sponsored the competition), was invited to present to her once again the beautiful silver trophy.

Indira received rapturous applause of support and her name will now be added to the engraved winner's list on the trophy.

Brent Young Musician of the Year 2010 - The Competition

Organised and presented by Brent Music Service (a Brent Council service), the finals of ‘Brent Young Musician of the Year 2010’, held at Claremont High School on the evening of Thursday 25th March saw an exciting end to this year’s competition.  From the auditions of over 50 young musicians back in January, the six most outstanding performers were selected as finalists to compete for the title of Brent Young Musician of the Year 2010.

Supported by a near capacity audience at Claremont High School and judged by a panel of highly qualified musicians, the evening offered a wealth of extremely impressive musicianship performed on cello, double bass, violin and piano.

The Winner - Indira Grier
Following very positive and congratulatory comments to all the finalists, the adjudicators’ decisions were announced with Indira Grier, a Year 10 student of Bentley Wood School, being the overall winner of ‘Brent Young Musician of the Year 2010’ for her engaging and contrasting cello performances of ‘Nana’ from Suite Populaire Espagnole by Falla followed by the 1st movement of the Mendlessohn D major Cello Sonata, accompanied by her Father on piano.

Indira began playing the cello at the age of 4 and added learning the piano aged 12.  She has private cello lessons with Melissa Phelps and she has been awarded a scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music.

Indira enjoys listening to classical music, Ella Fitzgerald and The Beatles and her favourite cellist is Jacqueline du Pre who has been her inspiration ever since hearing her performance of the Elgar Cello Concerto,

In the future, Indira hopes to study music at the Royal College of Music and ultimately become a professional soloist.

Comments from Brent Music Service
Paul Fensom, Head of Brent Music Service, and presenter for the evening commented
This has been an incredible event from start to finish with such a high standard of performances coming from all entrants, right from the initial auditions through to the finals this evening.  Over 50 youngsters started along this musical journey back in January and everyone who heard the finalists will agree that they fully embrace what can be achieved with hard work and guidance.  We are also extremely grateful to the Wembley Charitable Foundation and Wembley Stadium Ltd for their vital support of this initiative."

Deputy Head of Service, Eric Angus concluded: “It has been a fantastic event and all six finalists gave performances of such impressive levels.  Their professionalism and composure was also beyond their years.  It was particularly wonderful to see the positive reactions from members of the BMS Junior Ensemble who were in the audience supporting the finalists - wide-eyed and in awe of them – a true mark of success when one youngster can inspire another!"
