Preeti Mahankali-Rao
Instrument: Double Bass
Age: 16
Audition Pieces: Chanson Triste (Koussevitsky)
Vocalise (Faure)

Background Info:

Preeti is a Year 11 student at The Henrietta Barnett School and is taught on her double-bass privately by Cathy Elliott.  She is in great demand for the many school orchestras and music groups and also plays the piano and tabla, offering a great contrast in musical style.

The Start of a Talent
Preeti started to learn the double-bass at the age of 7, drawn to the instrument because of its sheer size and power.  She is currently studying at the Junior Royal Academy of Music where she also receives her piano instructions.

Special Playing Memories
Preeti has great memories of her first 'big' concert which was held at the Queen Elizabeth Hall.  More recently, she was lead bassist at a performance in the Royal Festival Hall under the baton of the renowned Sir Colin Davis - whilst the event obviously held its own prestige, a key memory of the concert for Preeti was the moment when her spike slipped and she went crashing into the cellist in front of her.  A brave face won over the disaster and she remains grateful to the rest of the orchestra who also managed to keep a straight face!

Inspiration
Preeti admires and respects the dedication and commitment shown by all musicians, but is particularly inspired by the music for double-bass by Giovanni Bottesini.

The Future
Preeti aspires to be a professional musician, hoping to first study at the Royal Academy of Music.  She feels that as long as her future holds music either in performance on double-bass and piano, conducting or composing, she will be delighted to be living and working with her passion.
