The BMS Junior Musician of the Year Competition
This new initiative has been introduced for 2009.  Organised by Brent Music Service, it is designed to encourage the more junior musicians that benefit from music tuition from the Service.  The competition was open to all students aged 9-13 who receive tuition from Brent Music Service in their school and/or perform in one of the many music ensembles run through the Brent Music Service Evening Centres.

This will be a bi-annual competition taking place in 2009, 2011 and so on.  Competition auditions take place towards the end of the preceding year from which 8 finalists (4 who are members of the BMS Junior Ensembles and 4 who are members of the BMS Senior Ensembles) are selected to perform at the finals and compete for Gold, Silver and Bronze medals.  The two gold medal winners will then have the opportunity to perform at a celebration concert as a guest soloist which takes place later that year.

2009
What a wonderful evening of entertainment!  This year's BMS Junior Musician of the Year was an undoubted success as the eight young finalists (selected from over 60 first round entries) overwhelmed the enthusiastic audience with their fantastic performances.

Special congratulations go to Kieran Varjavand and Emile Misquita who were the deserved Gold Medal winners with further congratulations being offered to all the other finalists who were awarded the respective silver and bronze medals.

BMS Junior Ensemble Musician of the Year Section:

  • Kieran Varjavand – 12 (guitar) - Gold Medal

  • Reuben Cantacuzino – 11 (saxophone) - Silver Medal

  • Emma Daly -13 (flute) - Bronze Medal

  • Leah Lovell – 10 (violin) - Bronze Medal

BMS Senior Ensemble Musician of the Year Section:

  • Emile Misquita – 11 (trumpet) - Gold Medal

  • Louise Hamilton-Vickers – 13 (trumpet) - Silver Medal

  • Catherine Lyons – 12 (flute) - Bronze Medal

  • Aaron Merai – 12 (euphonium) - Bronze Medal

The two Gold Medal winners, Kieran Varjavand and Emile Misquita, will now go on to perform as guest soloists at the forthcoming "BMS Junior Fest 2009" showcase event at Brent Town Hall on 9th July 2009.

Congratulations To Everyone!
Deputy Head of Service, Eric Angus commented: "From the outset of the competition, all the performers have shown such courage and determination by entering the competition, preparing their pieces and standing up in front of the panel of judges to perform.  The standard of playing was encouragingly high throughout and it was such a delight to see so many young players making the most of an opportunity to perform in this competition.  They all deserve huge congratulations and should enjoy their own personal achievements with their performances and preparation work, whether they were selected for the finals or not.

A Difficult Final Decision
The finals were judged by three very esteemed musicians, including Lizzie Bancroft (headteacher and former professional singer), Ben Mason (professional composer, teacher, tuba player and pianist) and Dimitri Van Zwanenberg (professional violinist and music teacher).

After having assessed all the performances, the judges met with the young musicians and opened their comments by acknowledging how extremely difficult it had been to make their choices, because of the impressively high standard of all their performances. They offered their best wishes to the finalists and announced the awards to the "very promising musicians of the future".

A Great Inaugural Event
The competition closed with rapturous applause and cheers for all of the performers, giving true confirmation that this, the first BMS Junior Musician of the Year competition, had been an outright success. An event to be repeated in 2011 giving the future contender plenty of time to get practising!
