Music Examinations
Brent Music Service is pleased to be able to enter its students for both practical (performance) and theory (written) examinations through the 'Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music' (ABRSM) examining board.

Although Brent Music Service encourages its students to take music examinations, it is not obligatory and our Tutors will always assess when a pupil is truly ready to be entered for an appropriate grade of examination.

Practical/Performance Examinations
Due to the number of practical examinations that take place with students of Brent Music Service, we are able to hold our own practical examination centre once a year where a special visit from an Associated Board examiner is arranged.  This is normally timetabled at the end of the Summer Term during the first week of the summer holidays.

The students will be fully prepared through their lessons (and essential home practise) for all areas of the examination which will be covered, including the set pieces, scales, sight-reading and aural work.

All practical examinations require a piano accompanist for each candidate.  We are pleased to be able to provide this service for the day for a small fee.  Examination entry fees are listed below and it is also worth considering the additional cost of the music materials required for the examination.  These are not normally too expensive and the BMS Tutor will advise the exact music to purchase, which will be available from all good music retailers.  [Click here to download Local Supplier List].

Practical Examination Entry Fees
Grade 1 - £29.60
Grade 2 - £35.30
Grade 3 - £39.40
Grade 4 - £43.90
Grade 5 - £46.70
Grade 6 - £54.70
Grade 7 - £60.00
Grade 8 - £70.80

Theory Examinations
Comprehensive Theory examination tuition is available at all our Evening Centres to help students obtain their best potential in understanding the written and technical details of music.

Music theory is an essential part of fully appreciating the creation and performance of music, so Brent Music Service is enthusiastic to encourage its students to look beyond the notes and find out more about how they got there in the first place!

The music theory tuition is targeted at the specific examinations being taken by the students and aids in their full preparation for the written test.

This year, Theory examinations through the ABRSM are scheduled to take place at 10.00am on Saturday 20th June 2009 (location to be confirmed).

Theory Examination Entry Fees
Grade 1 - £19.40
Grade 2 - £20.50
Grade 3 - £22.80
Grade 4 - £25.10
Grade 5 - £27.40
Grade 6 - £31.40
Grade 7 - £33.70
Grade 8 - £36.50

General Examination Information
Students will be notified at least two weeks prior to the exam stating the date, time and location of the Practical or Theory exam.

When it seems appropriate, an examination entry form will be given to the student which, on completion needs to be returned to the Brent Music Service office together with the appropriate payment. (Please note that Brent Music Service are currently unable to process payments by Debit/Credit cards).

Students can be entered for practical exams in other examining periods if required and the BMS Tutor can arrange for an individual examination entry.  Unfortunately, in this instance Brent Music Service will not be able to provide piano accompanists for examinations outside the annual BMS Examination Centre arrangement.
