The Performances

An Opening To Remember
Brent Makes Music 2010 opened with a ‘student’s perspective’ video-insight on the progressive way music can be enjoyed through the innovative tuition, early learning classroom programme and evening centre services provided by Brent Music Service.  The audience was then led to a spell-binding rendition of the event’s sub-title music ‘I Have A Song To Sing’, where the Year 4 soloist Aashish Khimasia, was gradually joined by 5 further co-singers and finally a 1,400 strong massed choir represented by 36 of the 58 Brent schools with which Brent Music Service work.

Impressive Performances Throughout
There were resounding performances from the BMS Junior Ensembles who presented a collection of film favourites. The evening also offered debuts public performances from both the BMS Flute Choir and the new rock/pop group the bAnd, together with a chance to hear Year 1-6 representatives from the highly successful early learning classroom music programme – “Music’sCool”.

The Brent Dohl Band provided a skillful and striking introduction, leading the BMS Junior Choir into a wonderful presentation of challenging African and Coldplay songs.

The Brent Special Schools gave a moving interpretation of ‘Love Is All Around’ and clearly displayed just how much fun and joy can be obtained through the challenges and achievements that music offers.

Guest soloist, Indira Grier (Brent Young Musician of the Year 2010) offered an overwhelming performance of Haydn's Cello Concerto in C Major (1st movement) which showed just how much can be achieved with practise!

Leading the evening to a close, the BMS Youth Orchestra performed a breathtaking collection of music from West Side Story, ensuring the thrilled audience responded with yet another standing ovation.

The Finale
The magnificent finale of ‘Hey Jude’ filled Wembley Arena with an unparalleled sound as it encompassed all 1,500 singers and instrumentalists and even brought the audience into the spotlight when they too were asked to join in with the singing!

A Few Final Words ...

Paul Fensom
Head of Brent Music Service
Mr Fensom was the host for Brent Makes Music 2010 and artfully guided the audience and performers through the entertaining yet demanding programme.

Paul was also responsible for arranging two of the performance pieces and conducted a number of the items with the massed choir and BMS Youth Orchestra.

But how do you bring such an amazing show to an end?
Paul summed up the whole event by addressing the audience with the definitive words:

These were your children performing tonight and weren’t they fabulous!

More About The Show . . .

BMS and Brent Makes Music 2010 - Supporting National Initiatives

Sing Up
With songs being the theme of Brent Makes Music 2010, it is was a perfect opportunity for Brent Music Service to spotlight the success of their 'Singing Schools'.

Throughout the year, staff from Brent Music Service have been visiting schools and providing singing training and support.  This has included promoting 'Sing Up' (the national singing programme) and they were proud to recognise the specific achievements of the participating schools who had earned a collection of silver and gold status 'Sing Up' awards.

Tune In - Year of Music
Brent Makes Music 2010 was also an event which supported the national project 'Tune In - Year of Music'.  This is an initiative from the Department for Education which aims to encourage young people across England to take part in more music-related activities during the 2009/10 academic year.  The evening's show was an ideal way to demonstrate the commitment to this initiative by involving 1,500 of Brent's young musicians in a performance at the world renowned venue of Wembley Arena.

Special Guest Soloist - Indira Grier
Brent Young Musician of the Year 2010

Indira Grier, won the title of Brent Young Musician of the Year 2010 on her cello in March.  As a result of this achievement she was invited to be the special guest soloist at Brent Makes Music 2010.

Indira chose to perform the 1st Movement of Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C Major and mesmerized the audience and other performers with her musicality and dexterity in performing this most challenging of classical works.

To mark Indira's success in winning the prestigious title, Mr Peter Swordy, Head of Centre of Excellence at Wembley Stadium and Director of the Wembley Stadium Charitable Foundation which sponsored the competition, was invited to present to her once again the beautiful Brent Young Musician of the Year silver trophy upon which she will so deservedly have her name engraved.

Honoured Guests

It was a pleasure to welcome so many honoured guests to join Brent Makes Music 2010.  Amongst those who attended, some notable appearances included:

The Mayor of Brent
Councillor Harbhajan Singh
When meeting with the other guests during  the interval, the Mayor was very complimentary about all the performers and organisers.

He was extremely impressed with the scale of the show and the wide variety of music styles and ensembles that were taking to the stage to perform.

Peter Swordy
Head of Centre of Excellence at Wembley Stadium Director of Wembley Stadium Charitable Foundation

Mr Swordy also commended all those involved for a highly successful and enjoyable show.  He is a keen supporter of the work of Brent Music Service and was invited to present the well deserved trophy to Indira Grier.

Mr John Christie

He later took to the stage to publicly offer his words of support and congratulations to everyone involved.

Offers of Thanks

An event on the scale of Brent Makes Music 2010 obviously involves a huge amount of preparation and work for everyone involved.  Without the dedication, support, commitment and determination of a large number of organisations and individuals, the show could not go on.  Brent Music Service would like to take this opportunity to thank the key contributors who enabled everyone to see how well 'Brent Makes Music'.

Brent Music Service would like to thank Brent Council for their ongoing support of the service.  More specifically for this event, they would also like to thank them for enabling Brent Music Service to be part of the Council's Wembley Arena Community Day Programme, which led to Brent Makes Music 2010 taking place at this wonderful venue.

Thanks are also offered to The Wembley Stadium Charitable Foundation for their continuing support. Their sponsorship assistance has made a huge difference to the work and initiatives of Brent Music Service for projects such as this landmark event.

Brent Music Service would also like to thank the staff and management of Wembley Arena in assisting them with the immense task of producing a show of this scale.

All the performers and their accompanying staff, together with the BMS Stage Band are also offered endless praise and thanks for the hard work they put in to making the event so successful - the night you took Wembley Arena!

Brent Music Service also wish to thank all the parents and carers who work so hard to ensure the children attend all the rehearsals, practise regularly and are supported in their musical ambitions.
